As for the “Greater Chinatown Community Association” specifically, we’re unsure of the roots of the organization in organized crime/the tong wars. As the association itself was formed in 1972, it’s more likely that it emerged from the community’s residents and new immigrants of the time. Today, the organization serves to aid residents in gaining access to education, healthcare, recreation, rehabilitation, and legal aid. They also contribute to a variety of political advocacy projects, largely surrounding food security, health and wellness, anti-Asian discrimination, Covid-19, and more. The reason that they were closed on the day we visited was because they were hosting a ‘Health Fair and Family Day’ close by, as they do relatively frequently.
