Introduction to Trefoil Arch:
My group and I decided to do Trefoil Arch as our research topic because of its differences compared to the Willowdell Arch which we explored together as a class near the Balto Statue. The descending stairs leading down to the arch from the West side gave it an unpleasant atmosphere as the interior of the arch appeared dark and gloomy. Perhaps, it’ll seem more tranquil and fitting to the park’s primary purpose of enjoying nature.
The arch itself was constructed in 1862 with the construction of the central park and is made from brownstone, which is different from the majority of bridges and arches around central park. It is located on 73rd st and creates a pathway from the conservatory water on the east to the lake, Loeb Boathouse and Bethesda fountain on the west. The two sides of the arch have different designs too. The east side has a Gothic take while the west has a more rounded architecture. Overall, walking through the arch compared to other parts of the park provided a different experience and feel.
